What is the Peterborough Learn to Drive Program
The Peterborough Learn to Drive Program was developed to support young people in the Peterborough district, and beyond, by giving them access to the tools they need to obtain their drivers licence. Helping learner drivers through every stage of their learner driving journey, the Peterborough Learn to Drive Program includes:
- Learn Safe Drive Safe (L’s) Courses
- One-on-one Instructor-led driving lessons; and
- Access to our volunteer car and ‘Driving Mentors’ to assist students in obtaining their mandatory 75 hours of supervised driving experience as part of the South Australian licencing system.
Supported through a partnership between the Australian Government Regional Employment Trials Program, RDA Yorke and Mid North, the District Council of Peterborough, the Peterborough Youth Centre, Oz Minerals and Accustom Consulting Kadina, the program has helped over 60 people obtain their drivers licence to date, since the program began in 2016.

Learn Safe Drive Safe (Ls’) courses
The Learn Safe Drive Safe (L’s) courses are run in partnership with Accustom Consulting Kadina and the District Council of Peterborough. Qualified Driving Instructors from Accustom run a full day theory workshop taking individuals wanting to obtain their Learner’s drivers licence through the South Australian Road rules including all give-way and general road rules. The instructors provide helpful tools and a decision-making matrix to help learners make the right choices for not only their theory test, but also future driving experiences. Students are then able to sit the Learner Theory test, under examination from an authorised theory tester from Service SA. This course is available when funding permits, for more information including upcoming course dates contact the Youth Centre Coordinator on peterboroughyouthcentre@gmail.com
Volunteer Driving Mentor Program
Many young people find it difficult to complete the 75 hours of mandatory driving experience required for a South Australian Drivers licence. This may be because of limited finances, or not having access to a vehicle or qualified person to supervise their driving. The Volunteer Driving Mentor Program supports learner drivers by connecting learner drivers with volunteer Driving Mentors and a suitable learner vehicle. Our volunteer Driving Mentors have undergone the relevant checks, screenings and training to support new drivers with the skills they need to successfully negotiate the driving journey. Our Mentors have worked with a range of new driver skill levels, and are equipped with the patience and experience to support all learner drivers.
